Every Friday until its publication, I'm going to blog something about Brave New Girls: Tales of Girls and Gadgets, a YA sci-fi anthology featuring tech-savvy heroines. The goal is to encourage more girls to enter Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math professions. All revenues from sales of the anthology will be donated to a scholarship fund through the Society of Women Engineers.
Last but not least in the story spotlight series is fellow editor Paige Daniels's contribution. I really loved this story for many reasons. First of all, I found the setting, an asteroid mining colony, to be super-cool and unique. As a bonus, wormholes are involved. Paige packs a lot of world-building into one little short. I also enjoyed the main character's take-no-crap attitude. The mystery was really fascinating too - kept me guessing.
16-year-old Lyvia has spent her life moving from outpost to outpost with her asteroid miner parents. And the company always sends them to the most run-down rocks under their control. Lyvia finds no reason to believe that Outpost Geti-P will be any different - until a freak accident leaves her an
Through her grief, Lyvia discovers a message her father left before the tragedy - and learns that he discovered something huge shortly before his death. Realizing that her parents' murder had been covered up, Lyvia sets out in search of the truth.
Paige Daniels is the pen name of Tina Closser. By day she works as an Electrical Engineer and Mom mushing her kids from gymnastics and violin practice. After the kids go to bed, she rocks out with her headphones turned to eleven and cranks out books. She is an uber science geek. If she wasn't married to the most terrific guy in the world, she would be a groupie for Adam Baldwin.

"The true key to innovation in our society is diversity without that you have the same ideas from the same people. We need new people in these STEM fields to spark innovation and creativity."
BRAVE NEW GIRLS will be released in Summer 2015! Sign up here to receive a notification when it's available to order.
