Every Friday until its publication, I'm going to blog something about Brave New Girls: Tales of Girls and Gadgets, a YA sci-fi anthology featuring tech-savvy heroines. The goal is to encourage more girls to enter Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math professions. All revenues from sales of the anthology will be donated to a scholarship fund through the Society of Women Engineers.
Today, I'm spotlighting one of the stories that will be featured in the anthology.
TITLE
Flight of the Zephyr
AUTHOR
Aimie K. Runyan
STORY DESCRIPTION
On the planet Tenturia, mining service is mandatory. But Wynn Felstrander managed to avoid it by working in her father's lab instead, after the government decided they needed her scientific skills more than another laborer. Still, she's trapped on the planet by the all-powerful regime.
When Wynn makes an important breakthrough in the process for refining the crystals used for fuel, she thinks she's finally found her ticket to freedom. But then she discovers that the Council is hiding a sinister truth about the very energy source she's spent her whole life working on. And the consequences for her mining-outpost home could be dire. Wynn soon finds herself facing the most difficult decision of her life. Should she take the Council's offer for safety? Or risk everything to leak the truth?
WHY WE PICKED IT
Not only did this story fit perfectly with the theme, with a girl who uses her science smarts to save the day, but it was wonderfully written, with characters you really feel for. And the world was fantastically imagined; I was actually bummed when I finished reading this one because I wanted more!
AUTHOR BIO
Aimie K. Runyan is an author of historical fiction and lover of all things French and French-Canadian. Her debut novel, PROMISED TO THE CROWN, forthcoming from Kensington books in May 2016, is the story of the brave women who left their lives behind in France to help secure Louis XIV’s Quebec colony. She loves travel, cooking, nerd culture, movies, and of course, reading all the fiction she can get her hands on. She lives in Colorado with her amazing husband Allan, two adorable children, CiarĂ¡n and Aria, and her cowardly Shetland Sheepdog, Pippin.
THOUGHTS ON BRAVE NEW GIRLS
"I’m perhaps not the typical contributor to this anthology. I’ve always been a liberal arts girl, and not because I was told ‘that’s what girls do’. Quite the opposite. My older sisters excelled in math and science while I was off cavorting with the English geeks and Drama nerds. That said, I want my daughter to have the same gift my parents gave me—to know that a woman’s place is wherever she damn well wants it to be. And I also love, love, love a well-written Sci Fi or fantasy story, in book or movie form. I think they are a powerful vehicle for showing us the possibilities in store for human kind; for better or for worse."Website: www.aimiekrunyan.com
